The driverless future is still a long way off, and <u>today’s update from Google only proves that</u>: The company finally decided to put headlights on its autonomous runabout.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In a blog post published today, the Google Self-Driving Car Project called this update “the first real build of our self-driving vehicle prototype.” That means, unlike previous prototypes—<b>the first of which we saw in May</b>—this new flivver finally has all the requisite technologies packed into one vehicle. Y’know, all the little stuff, like steering, and brakes, and headlights.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The fact that Google’s project is still in these early stages should surprise nobody. It and the Ford Explorer drew a generation of drivers out of sedans and into big, tall wagons, for better and for worse. It's still one of the best sellers today, and though a handful of other SUVs combine toughness and luxury ambiance, almost none of them do it at the Grand Cherokee's price point.</div><div><br /></div><div>Back then, and still today, the <i>Jeep Grand Cherokee</i> is a very off-road-capable luxury sport-utility vehicle, offering rather chunky, rugged styling, along with enough family-friendly practicality inside.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first-generation Grand Cherokee (called ZJ by the company and off-road enthusiasts) wasn't an exceptional on-road performer by any measure, but they moved just fine with the long-running and torquey 4.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine (of AMC origins). The 5.2-liter or 5.9-liter V-8 engines were definitely the choice for those who towed, and the larger 5.9 Limited felt like an all-out muscle truck. During some of this time, the most luxurious versions of the Grand Cherokee were badged Grand Wagoneer, and included a specially trimmed, leather-lined cabin and a wood-paneled-look exterior.</div><div>The second-generation (WJ) <i>Grand Cherokee</i> arrived with a rounded version of the original's styling that was still distinctive and recognizable. The interior trimmings were more luxurious, and mechanical updates included a new five-speed automatic transmission and a hydraulically actuated Quadra-Drive four-wheel-drive system; rear-wheel drive and a more basic four-wheel-drive system remained on offer as well. This time, Jeep threw out the old in-line six, replacing it with an also-dated 3.7-liter V-6, but all-new 5.7-liter and 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 engines joined the range. While the V-8s brought brisk acceleration and plenty of muscle for towing, this generation was widely panned by critics as being a step back in what mattered to much of the Grand's buyer base; most notably, it felt a bit tighter, seating-wise, than the previous generation.</div><div><br /></div><div>For a short time, <i>Jeep also offered a 3.0 CRD</i> turbo-diesel version of the third-gen Grand Cherokee; it performed well and was quite fuel-efficient, but emissions regulations and slow sales forced an early demise.</div><div><br /></div><div>In all of its existence through the '90s and '00s, the Grand Cherokee was lacking several things that were increasingly required by suburban families: More precise, carlike handling; a better on-road ride; and top-notch safety. But over the past decade especially its rugged image and Rubicon capability were no longer enough; its sloppy steering and choppy-yet-boundy ride were, in fact, deal-breakers to many, and families moved over to other luxury-brand SUVs that didn't cost much more.</div><div><br /></div><div>Things changed when the 2011 Grand Cherokee was introduced in 2010. Thanks to the earlier DaimlerChrysler tie-up, the new Grand Cherokee shares a basic architecture with the Mercedes M- and GL-Class SUVs. It's more sophisticated as a result, with smoother on-road dynamics, an available air suspension, and great steering, while still retaining the off-road chops that made the Grand Cherokee what it is up until then. And even better, Jeep has also introduced a Range Rover-like Selec-Terrain system that simplifies getting through the tough stuff, with an Auto mode plus separate ones for sand/mud, snow, and rock.</div><div><br /></div><div>With its modern and more refined 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, in addition to returning HEMI V-8s, the new Grand Cherokee is also a bit more fuel efficient in its base form.</div><div><br /></div><div>Beginning with the 2006 Grand Cherokee SRT8, Jeep showed that it could appeal to go-fast on-road enthusiasts, too. The performance model packed a 420-hp, 6.1-liter HEMI, a sport-tuned suspension, and a host of upgrades, and this model could not only do modest off-roading but also get to Autobahn speeds and reach 60 mph in well under five seconds. The SRT8 returned for 2012, with a 465-hp, 6.4-liter HEMI fitted to the much-improved, new-generation Grand Cherokee. It's now simply known as the Grand Cherokee SRT.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Grand Cherokee has always been ahead of its time with respect to features. Back in its first-gen version the Grand Cherokee offered features like steering-wheel audio controls, plush leather upholstery, heated seats, and keyless entry. The newest models can be had with extensive entertainment and information extras like Uconnect Web (to turn the vehicle into a wireless hotspot).</div><div><br /></div><div>In 2013, a rugged Trailhawk version of the Grand Cherokee joined the lineup. A new eight-speed automatic transmission is now standard throughout the lineup. Brand-new for the model year was a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 that achieves an excellent 30 mpg on the highway. Towing capacities were boosted and now range up to 7,400 pounds for the V-8 and diesel. SRT models (no longer SRT8) gained a new Launch Control feature, as well as a Track Mode that sends 70 percent of torque by default to the rear wheels for high-performance driving.</div><div><br /></div><div>All models in the 2014 Grand Cherokee lineup added a new shorter grille, slimmer taillights, and new LED rear lamps that follow the shape of the headlamps. New active-safety features included Forward Collision Alert with Crash Mitigation, and a new 19-speaker, 825-watt Harman/Kardon surround-sound audio system highlights a set of revised infotainment features.</div><div><br /></div><div>Changes for 2015 include an output bump to 475 hp for the Grand Cherokee SRT, as well as a new Red Vapor package for the highest-performance GC. The Summit also gets some enhancements, including an Argentine Tan leather option, a new monochrome California Edition exterior package, and acoustic glass. This prototype reveals that the Sports Series may be slightly longer than existing McLaren products like the 650S and P1, despite all three cars sharing many of their internals.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Yes, the basis of the Sports Series will be the same carbon fiber monocoque chassis used in <i>McLaren’s other cars</i>, and borrowed from them as well will be the familiar Ricardo-built 3.8-liter V-8 engine and Graziano-sourced seven-speed SSG dual-clutch transmission. With the 650S packing 641 horsepower, output in the Sports Series will likely start around 500 hp, providing a healthy performance gap between the two.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So apart from less performance, what else will help differentiate the Sports Series? The basic answer is price. The Sports Series is designed to challenge cars like the Aston Martin V12 Vantage, Ferrari California T and high-end versions of the Porsche 911, so it's possible we'll see pricing dip below $200k. The 650S is priced from $265,500. And like the Porsche in particular, the Sports Series will offer a number of variants designed to cater to different buyer types, from those seeking a soft grand tourer to hardcore track fans. A convertible is also planned.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">McLaren recently started a teaser campaign for the new Sports Series that revealed a part of the car’s design. As mentioned, the world debut will take place early next year, most likely at March’s <u>2015 Geneva Motor Show</u>. We find it somewhat ironic that Ferrari christened its second-generation <b>California the “California </b>T,” because whereas the outgoing model would be right at home lugging clubs to the golf course, this new one looks more apt to skip tee time for a hard run down an Alpine pass.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>• Sign up for the C/D newsletter for reviews, news, and more</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The “T” in its name, of course, stands for “turbocharged,” which the new California is. In fact, the convertible is twin-turbocharged, but either because a certain German automaker might take umbrage with the use of the “TT” name or because saying “California TT” out loud makes us giggle, <u>Ferrari stuck with plain old</u> “T.” Either way, the name’s better than “LaFerrari” and we’re pleased that <i>Ferrari</i> didn’t simply name the car California Turbo. There are Volkswagen Beetle Turbos and Chevy Malibu Turbos, so it would seem déclassé and unoriginal for a Ferrari. On the other hand, “T” is so concise and simplified as to almost overshadow the marvel of an engine it represents. The new twin-turbo V-8 features a tight 3.9 liters of displacement—Ferrari actually calls it a 3.8, but the mill displaces 3855 cc—a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, and direct fuel injection, helping it to produce 553 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 557 lb-ft of torque at 4750. The automaker cites the block’s 90-degree V, a flat-plane crankshaft, and a tuned three-piece exhaust manifold as reassurance. A version of this same engine—with 30 fewer horsepower and 33 fewer lb-ft of torque—comports itself well in the new Maserati Quattroporte, so we’re not terribly worried the T’s soundtrack will suck. It certainly won’t suck to look at, either—what with the intake runners and cam covers on full display and in Ferrari’s signature red crinkle finish.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>You Can Pinin My Farina</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The new twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8 engine might have been the 2015 California T’s flagship feature if not for the car’s sharper styling. Unlike the functional-but-weird La <u>Ferrari</u>, which was designed in-house, the entry-level California wears almost classically gorgeous sheetmetal shaped by <u>Ferrari’s </u>hired pens at Pininfarina. Overall, the California appears longer and lower than the car it replaces, despite carrying over nearly identical dimensions. The gigantic posterior has been toned down a bit, thanks to a bevy of horizontal styling elements and a mean-looking diffuser that reduce the visual height of the rear deck. There’s still a power-folding hardtop back there—the reason for the mild bustle-butt effect—but overall the California T now looks nearly as good going as it does coming.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Pininfarina recycled elements from the larger, V-12–powered F12berlinetta for much the rest of the car, including the headlights, the prominent scallop that runs from just behind the front wheels to the rear fenders, and the pumped-out fenders. We actually prefer the California’s simpler grille, as well as its hot-looking hood vents and the way the body sits athletically on its wheels. Inside, the dashboard has been updated with fresh materials and shapes, a new 6.5-inch infotainment screen that looks way more modern, and a nifty digital touch-screen turbo boost gauge/performance menu prominently displayed above the center stack. The rear seats are still useless shelves capable of hauling a single can of soda each, and Ferrari’s hatred of steering-column stalks continues here—the steering wheel is cluttered by every stalk-related item.
