Anyone who knows Lotus is aware that the British Automaker doesn't make its cars fast by dropping a huge V-8 engine under the hood. Instead, the philosophy Lotus has prescribed to is adding lightness to a car to increase speed, not just pouring more horsepower and torque at the situation. The latest example of this idea in action is the new Lotus Exige Sport 350.<br />

The Exige s is already a pretty lightweight car, but Lotus took things further by shedding another 112 pounds. That makes the curb weight for the Exige Sport 350 just under 2,500 pounds. To drop that much weight, Lotus combed through the car for anything that could be ditched or made with lighter materials. Some of the design changes involve an exposed gearshift mechanism and a louvred engine cover.<br />

Power comes from a supercharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine sourced from none other than Toyota. It generates 345 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, which both peak at 4,500 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is blistering at a mere 3.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 170 mph.<br />

This view will be uninterrupted by the pillars as a screen that would come embedded in the surface of each pillar would show a LIVE video from cameras that will cover those angles outside the car that are generally obscured in the blind spots created by the pillars. This way, pedestrians and vehicles on the road would remain visible all around the car. Also, by connecting these pillars with a new-age Heads-Up display, the movement of other road occupants would be shown to the driver thru an on-screen halo that will move across the car’s virtual windscreen.This system would make the pillars transparent as per the driver’s requirement by studying his body-movements.</div>

It doesn't appear that Audi's done much testing of the R8 e-tron piloted driving concept, so we're not sure if the car can meet its full performance potential in autonomous mode. We're guessing the ride is dialed down a couple notches from the heights a skilled driver could take it. More than a means of seriously testing electric performance within an autonomous system, the concept car seems more a clever way for Audi to add a little trade-show flash to its autonomous driving technology, while shining the spotlight on the other cool tech in the production R8 e-tron.</div>

The R8 e-tron's standard tech includes a 92-kWh T-shaped lithium-ion battery providing up to 279.6 miles (450 km) of range, a 456-hp (340-kW) dual-motor powertrain with enough oomph to take the car from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, and a new multi-material Space Frame. To that, Audi adds a full autonomous driving suite to create the piloted R8 concept, which it classifies a "technical study." Data from the newly developed laser scanner, the video cameras, the ultrasonic sensors and the radar sensors is sent to the central driver assistance control unit (zFAS). That central computer then recreates an accurate picture of the car's surroundings to empower human-less decision making and actuation.</div>
